As a parent, you never want to see your child in pain. So, when he or she says they\u2019re experiencing tooth sensitivity<\/a> when eating, drinking, or brushing their teeth, naturally it\u2019s a cause for concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many things that could be causing your child\u2019s tooth discomfort, some more serious than others. But don\u2019t panic just yet. Here are a few common reasons why your child could be experiencing oral pain, and what you can do about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Poor Brushing or Flossing Habits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most common reasons children experience sensitive teeth is poor oral health habits. It\u2019s possible that they may not be brushing well enough or flossing often enough, causing gum tenderness or bleeding when they brush. It can also translate to sensitivity when consuming hot or cold food and drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cavities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cavities are another reason your child might have sensitive teeth. That\u2019s because it is wearing away at the structure of the tooth, causing your child to feel pain when eating, drinking, or brushing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developing Tooth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Incoming! A new tooth getting ready to erupt is another reason your child might experience tooth sensitivity. This is due to the new permanent tooth pushing its way through the gums and forcing the baby tooth out of the mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enamel Erosion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When your child consumes too many sugary or acidic foods, it can slowly eat away at their tooth enamel, causing the teeth to become sensitive. If your child struggles with this, speak to your dentist about receiving fluoride treatment. They may also prescribe a special toothpaste that has more fluoride than over-the-counter brands to help keep the enamel strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sinus Infections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It may seem strange, but oddly enough a sinus infection can affect your child\u2019s teeth. This is because the swollen sinuses apply pressure to the teeth, causing pain and sensitivity to the upper jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What To Do If Your Child Has Sensitive Teeth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your child mentions their teeth are hurting, or if you notice them favoring one side of the mouth over the other, it\u2019s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your dentist. They will take a closer look and see if there are any issues that need intervention such as fillings or fluoride treatments. They can even help teach your kids better brushing habits, so they experience less discomfort when eating, drinking, and caring for their teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
