The last thing children need to be worried about while at school and among friends is the potential for someone to notice their dental filling. Kids care about what others think; they don’t want to stand out for the wrong reasons. While this might not be the only reason traditional amalgam is not used in our Healthy Kids Pediatric Dentistry office, we recognize that it can cause an unpleasant appearance. This is why we use biocompatible resin when placing our tooth-colored fillings in Aspen Hill. If you have a child who needs treatment for a cavity, call us to ask about what we can do to maintain their natural, beautiful appearance.

What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings

Tooth-colored fillings are custom restorations designed to seal a cavity-stricken tooth so that future reinfection does not occur. Their lifelike appearance allows them to blend in with existing tooth enamel, so your child can embrace a beautiful smile and remain confident when around their friends.

Our dentists use composite resin, which is a mixture of ultra-fine glass and plastic, to fill the treated tooth and provide a more durable structure.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

If your child needs a tooth-colored filling, our team will begin by clearing out the damaged and decayed portion of the tooth. This allows us to get rid of any bad bacteria and unhealthy tissues that could potentially spread and affect other portions of your child’s smile.

Using a shade guide, the dentist will match the composite resin to the natural shade of their teeth and begin to create the mixture that will be applied to your child’s tooth. When ready, we will fill the tooth with the resin and use a curing light to harden it in place.

After a bite check and making any necessary adjustments, your child will be able to leave. We’ll provide some helpful instructions for them to follow in the hours following their appointment, such as not eating until the anesthesia wears off and practicing good oral hygiene.

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

There are many wonderful benefits of tooth-colored fillings that your child may not realize they will achieve, such as:

  • A restoration that is customized based on their tooth’s needs.
  • Dentist uses a shade guide to match the resin to your child’s natural tooth shade, so it all blends in.
  • Composite resin doesn’t expand like traditional amalgam, so your child will be less likely to experience further damage to the tooth that might otherwise cause additional damage when exposed to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Composite resin that can last 7-10 years as long as your child takes care of their smile.
  • Using composite resin minimizes the chances of tooth sensitivity – a problem many suffer from while wearing traditional amalgam fillings.
  • The process can be completed in a single dental appointment.
